  Diarrhea in Cats

Diarrhea is a problem not uncommon to cats.

First - for those of you that don't know - what is diarrhea?

Diarrhea is characterized as watery or watery-mucoid stool. Diarrhea results from excessive water content in the feces and is an important sign of intestinal diseases in cats.

There are MANY different causes of diarrhea. But let's address this question - How can you PREVENT it?

1. Make sure your cat has no interstinal parasites ("worms"). We can check them with a simple test, if necessary, and treatment with a high-quality, safe "dewormer" is pretty simple.

2. This is the most important way to prevent diarrhea. Don't feed table scraps. Don't give your cat anything he or she is not used to.

3. Keep your cat out of the trash. Getting into the trash and eating spoiled food or inappropriate items is a very common cause of diarrhea.

4. Keep your cat supervised if he/she goes out. Indoor only cats have less problems eating things they aren't used to.

5. Don't give your cat any medications without the recommendation of your veterinarian. Some medications can cause diarrhea or even be fatal.

6. Feed a steady diet of high quality cat food.

Good nutrition does make a difference to your cat's health and overall happiness. Make sure you are feeding your cat a good quality food.

Remember, where any pet food is involved, you REALLY do get what you pay for.

I hope these six tips save your cat from experiencing problems with diarrhea. When you follow these tips, you can prevent most of the causes. When you don't, your cat will be at risk for diarrhea. These six areas are the most common reasons I see cats with diarrhea problems.

We hope that you will find this information helpful in your quest for better pet care. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail us.
