PEMPHIGUS

General Information:

Pemphigus is a group of severe skin disorders resulting from improper functioning of the animal's immune system. Skin changes generally occur in:
  • underarm areas of the front and back legs;
  • face;
  • mouth;
  • nose; and/or,
  • areas around the anus or genitals.
  • A common site for abnormalities is around body openings.

    The cause of pemphigus is unknown, but all cases involve autoantibody production, in which the animal's immune system produces antibodies that attack its own body cells.

    Treatment Information:

    Pemphigus is a serious condition, and many cases are eventually fatal.

    1. Treatment involves large doses of anti-inflammatory and/or anti-cancer drugs. Side effects are common, and various blood tests and regular physical examinations are necessary to monitor progress and side effects during treatment.

    2. Many animals require lifelong therapy.

    3. All the medication must be given as directed. Call your veterinarian's office if you cannot carry out any prescribed treatment.

    4. Watch your pet closely, and report any unusual activities or signs to your veterinarian's office.

    We hope that you will find this information helpful in your quest for better pet care. If you have any questions or comments, please call your veterinarian's office, or feel free to e-mail us.
